Amber Marshall Praises Heartland's Rare Wholesome Family Themes

Can you believe it? Heartland, the show that feels like a warm hug on a chilly evening, is galloping into its seventeenth season. And if you ask its long-time star, Amber Marshall (our beloved Amy Fleming), the magic is definitely still there.
It's kind of amazing to think about a show running for that long, right? Amber herself seems a bit delightfully surprised by it all.
"When I think about all the hours we have spent filming this show and…I’m still not sick of it, so that’s saying something!" she recently joked.
And honestly, who can blame her for still loving it? Especially when a big part of the job involves being out in the stunning Canadian landscape.
More Than Just a Set: Why Filming Outdoors Matters

Forget stuffy studios! Amber counts herself incredibly lucky compared to actor friends who spend their days indoors. For her and the Heartland crew, the great outdoors is their studio.
"I think that’s what makes us really lucky and what stands out about HEARTLAND is that we get to see it all, and we get to be a part of all the seasons and actually be outside enjoying the weather,” she explained.
She feels that those breathtaking views and wide-open spaces aren't just pretty pictures; they infuse the show with a certain "warmth." It's a feeling that perfectly mirrors what the show is all about. As Amber puts it, "The whole idea of HEARTLAND is this nice, family contentment and it’s found right here." It just feels right, doesn't it?
Finding Comfort in a Disconnected World: Heartland's Wholesome Appeal
So, what's the secret sauce? Why do families keep coming back to the Fleming-Bartlett ranch year after year? Talking with TV Insider, Amber nailed what many of us probably feel: it’s a safe harbour in a sometimes crazy world.
"I think fans are really looking for a nice, wholesome, family show that they can sit down together and watch and not be worried about the content. Not have to explain things to their kids,” Marshall shared.
Think about it. How many shows can you truly watch with everyone, from grandkids to grandparents, without reaching for the remote?
"That is their common thread. It’s something we can all enjoy and sit and talk about," she continued. "In such a fast-paced world, where so many people are separated by devices and technology... Everybody is very disconnected, but they can still get together to sit and watch our show together."
It's like Heartland provides that much-needed space to just breathe and connect, together.
What's Next for Amy Fleming? A Peek into Season 17
Okay, okay, enough waxing poetic – what about Amy herself? Amber assures us that our favourite horse whisperer is doing well as Season 17 unfolds.
"Amy is in a really good place in Season 17," she teased, promising "lots of fun stories" are on the way. We can't wait to see what adventures await!
Sisterly Bonds: On-Screen Chemistry and Off-Screen Friendship
And that lovely connection we see between sisters Amy and Lou? It turns out, it’s pretty genuine! Michelle Morgan, who plays Lou, chimed in about her real-life friendship with Amber.
"The truth is, for Amber and I, luckily our relationship has flourished over the years and we get along better than ever," Michelle explained. Forget on-set drama; these two genuinely appreciate each other. "With some shows, people get really sick of each other... but we have a great relationship... We get to do this scene as sisters." You can feel that warmth radiating off the screen!
It's Not Just Us: Why Critics Love Heartland Too
It’s not just fans who adore the show. Critics often praise Heartland for its consistent quality and positive messages. Movieguide® once reviewed an episode ("Dare To Dream" from Season 12) and highlighted its "great writing and excellent filming and acting, with stunning scenery..." They pointed out the "warm and genuinely supportive family environment" and themes like "patience, respect for others, kindness, honesty, hard work, overcoming weaknesses, and integrity."
The review beautifully sums up the show's impact: "The characters aren’t perfect, though. They must deal with brokenness, loss and heartache, but they overcome these challenges with perfect love and support for each other. HEARTLAND is a wonderful TV show. It leaves viewers feeling uplifted and encouraged."
Isn't that exactly why we tune in? In a world craving connection and a little bit of hope, Heartland continues to deliver, season after season. It's more than just a show; it feels like coming home.

This describes the show very well. I love it because it has no vulgarity and the a disgusting dress codes. I wish there were more shows like this that are morally good.

I love the Heartland series. It is very heartwarming and I enjoy everything about it-from the big family, horses and rural setting. I really liked Amy and Ty together but that will be coming to an end and I will miss that-I am just getting Series 10 on my TV channel now. I know you will be in Madison, WI for the Midwest Horse Show, which is only about 12 miles from where I live. My daughter plans to attend the show as she has two horses.
