Love, Family, and Ranch Life: How Heartland’s Core Values Keep Fans Coming Back

Not many TV shows reach 250 episodes, and even fewer keep drawing in viewers worldwide after 17 seasons. But the much-loved Canadian drama Heartland has achieved just that.
Celebrating this amazing milestone, the show premiered its latest season at the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) on September 28, 2023. Clearly, there's just something about those warm storylines and the bond the cast shares that keeps people coming back.
“I love that we can share what we do across the world,” said Michelle Morgan, who plays Lou Fleming on the show.

A Global Fanbase Rooted in Family
Among the many long-time fans who attended the premiere were Arely Zavala and her mother, Santa Olmedo, who first fell in love with the series back in Mexico.
“When we moved here, we watched every time a new season comes out,” said Zavala, who relocated to Calgary in 2008.

The pair’s most memorable moment? A chance encounter with Michelle Morgan at Costco that blossomed into a warm, ongoing connection.
“Michelle expressed herself like my family,” Zavala recalled, smiling. “When we attended other events, she recognized us and even spoke to us in Spanish.”
Morgan, whose own roots are Latin American, says the connection with Latin American fans hits close to home.
“It’s huge for my parents,” Morgan shared. “It means so much to them that their family can enjoy it.”
Why We Keep Watching Heartland
Many believe it's because the show has always stayed true to its roots – telling stories about love, family, and everything that comes with life on a ranch.
Shaun Johnston, who plays the beloved Jack Bartlett, believes the show’s message is what truly stands the test of time.
“The message we send is universal. It transcends all these different cultures [and] languages,” said Johnston. “The fact that it’s as popular in those places as it is here is a monumental undertaking… it’s a testament to how good we make the show.”
Behind the scenes, the camaraderie of the cast and crew is just as heartfelt as the on-screen storylines.
“The people on the show are like my family,” said Morgan. “The cast and crew are like my family.”
Johnston agrees—and says watching the younger cast grow into adults has been a joy.
“I protected them from the business while we were working together and now they protect me,” he joked.
Morgan has also taken on new roles behind the camera, directing episodes for the past four seasons—further proof that Heartland nurtures both storytelling and talent.
What to Expect in Season 17
According to Morgan and Johnston, Season 17 will deliver everything fans love most—including surprise returns from familiar faces.
“You get all the good things about Heartland… all the characters in their glory,” Johnston teased.
For those who missed the CIFF premiere, the new season debuted on CBC Gem and CBC TV on October 1, 2023, at 7 p.m.
A Story That Feels Like Home
Heartland really captures the feel of Alberta ranch life, but it's the way it explores love and resilience that truly connects with people. It's more than just a TV show; it feels like something we all experience together.
No matter where you're watching, from Calgary down to Mexico, it keeps reminding you of what really matters: family, connection, and where you come from.
